This week has flown by!
Monday we had a free morning and I spent the morning at an internet café here which is located in an old school bus. Its pretty awesome, all the seats are removed and the computers are lined along one side, with couches along the other for those using wi-fi. After Spanish class Monday we had Dance Classes at CPI. They were lots of fun. There are only two guys in our group so Emily and I were partners. We took turns being the man in the pair. It was fun. Afterwards I went to dinner at El Marquez with Dr. Huber, Dr. Powell and Emily since my tico family was going to a meeting that night.
Tuesday we visited the Cloud Forest School, or as they call it- Centro de Education Creativa. It’s a school funded by donations from the United States and tuition of the students which is taught in mostly English. In the younger grades only Spanish grammar is taught in Spanish and in the upper grades only Social Studies, Civics and Spanish is taught in Spanish. The Campus is Beautiful. It is all outdoor friendly, there are gardens and greenhouses, compost piles and reforestation projects. The high school is fueled by a wind mill and 4 solar panels. It is quite amazing. We were able to speak with some of the teachers there when Dr. Powell had a workshop for them in the evening and their instruction is very forward thinking. I was amazed at the difference between this school and the public schools we were visiting. The public school classrooms were basically empty except for desks and a blackboard. These classrooms reminded more of US classrooms with libraries and group tables, etc.
More soon.. sorry so short! Free time is so limited!
